There’s a way you can get MORE done in LESS time with LESS stress.
Not only will it take less time but the end product will be of a higher quality. You’ll get further in the areas you actually want to pursue and waste less time on the meaningless things.
All you gotta do is focus 🙂
We can’t focus on more than one thing at a time. You might think you can, but what you’re really doing is playing focus ping pong back and forth between tasks. It’s more efficient to do one thing and do it well.
The One Thing
What is one thing you can do right now that will make everything else easier or even unnecessary? I’m taking this concept from a book I highly recommend: The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results.
This can be applied to any situation at a macro or micro level to help you choose ONE focus in any given moment. Whether it’s one goal per hour, day, week, month, year, or one main life-focus, making a decision to drop everything else for an amount of time will boost your results in a big way.
My favourite is setting one outcome for each studio session. I turn off my phone, open one project and work until I achieve the outcome. It helps to make these outcomes realistic and achievable – there’s no use stressing yourself out or setting yourself up for failure. Momentum from small wins can be very powerful.
Overwhelm is huge for me and I believe it’s a major cause of stress and anxiety which leads people to quit or even worse, never start.
The problem is focusing on a mountain of tasks ahead instead of the one task in front of us. If we line up a single task and knock it over, the momentum this creates is like dominos helping us knock over the next one.
The 10th Degree
Think about how many areas of your life are overcrowded with different activities. Do you ever feel like you’re just treading water? You might need to focus your energy. The images below show the benefits in a simple way.
If you want to make real progress in area of your life, you need to give it the attention it deserves. Focus 🙂
“We are kept from our goal, not by obstacles, but by a clearer path to a lesser goal”
Worthwhile goals are hard to reach. We get distracted along the way. Something shiny appears – an easier, lesser goal. If we jump ship to these lesser goals we never reach what we really want.
Which lesser goals have you been settling for? Starting a new song instead of finishing a current project. Making an impulse purchase instead of saving for something you really want. The long term cost of these lesser goals can really add up.
That’s it from me, FOCUS!
